What’s new in version 1.7?

If you recently updated to iOS 7 you’ll notice the Farmstand design blending a bit with the new style. We also squashed some bugs we found on iOS 7 devices.

What we’re most excited about is teaming up with Food Day to help promote their mission!

Food Day is a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.

We believe in Food Day and we imagine you do too. So, when you load the app you’ll see Food Day events in your area so you can join up with others in the celebration.

What’s new in version 1.6?

A special thanks to Community Transformation Grant Project Region 5 in North Carolina for helping make this latest update possible. They’re doing some amazing work in NC to create healthier communities.

Market Filtering

Farmstand - Market Filters

Tapping the new “Filter markets” button under the map shows options to sort and filter results. With CTG Project Region 5 we added nutrition assistance programs such as SNAP/EBT, WIC, and senior FMNP to help low-income individuals and families find fresh local food. You can choose to only show markets that accept those payment options and viewing any market will show the special payment types they accept.

The other filters let you sort by next open time so markets show up by day of week (a highly requested feature) and the last option lets you hide markets that are closed for the season or if we don’t know their hours (which YOU can update if you know them and we’ll love you forever).

Invite Friends

Invite Friends

Eating fresh food is more fun with friends, right? Invite people to use Farmstand by tapping the Invite friends button from the Find & Invite Friends screen. This area shows up for logged in users and lets you send a message to friends via email, text message, Facebook, Twitter, or other apps on your phone that allow sharing.

Happy Farmstanding!

Farmstand for the web is live

Farmstand - Fresh food at your fingertips.

A number of Android users helped test the web version of Farmstand and it’s live for everyone. The site is optimized for a mobile experience but feel free to use it on your computer. We know there are still quirks and improvements needed bit it’s at a good working state. We’d rather have users taking advantage of the great farmers’ market information than waiting on us. You know how developers can be…

Getting where we are would have been really hard without the help of these wonderful friends and volunteers who helped test and give feedback. A big thank you to all of them for sharing their time!

The awesome Android testers: Amanda Eggen, Bill Lubing, Caleb Stephens, Chris Lambrecht, Edward Ingram, Fredrick Selby, Gary Pendergast, Glenn Rittenhouse, Jen Boylan, Joanna Sable, Jonatan Billiau, Laurel McGilvery, Lisa Taerk, Melissa Parent, Noah Ranells, Oliver Griswold, Robynn Jensen, Ryan Tasovac, Sandor Burja, Tim Boylan, and Tom Kolbeck

As usual, we love hearing your suggestions and feedback. hi@farmstandapp.com

Local Food at Your Fingertips

This article was originally posted Friday, June 28th, 2013 on FoodDay.org. We’re so excited to partner with them!

What if everyday food decisions affected our health, environment, farmers, and neighbors? Silly question, right? You already know this is true. The better question is: “How can we make sure our actions improve our health, contribute to a healthy environment, support local farmers, and make sure no one is hungry in our community?”

That’s exactly why we built Farmstand.

Farmstand Activity Our dream is to connect every community with locally grown food. Whether it’s from a farmers’ market, CSA, grassroots campaign, restaurant, food pantry, or online delivery service, we’re taking a simple tap on your phone and turning it into finding fresh food, preventing food waste, and feeding those in need. We have over 8,600 farmers’ markets listed and exciting updates are on the way.

You are the hero.

We’re not trying to invent a new community – you already exist. We’re building an app that helps all of us make a greater impact together. The content is contributed by regular people like yourself who want to make a difference. Find a local farmers’ market, take photos within the app, and share them on Facebook and Twitter to spread the love and awareness of healthy food. We’re excited to announce that you’ll soon be able to use Farmstand to find Food Day events near you.

Grab Farmstand for iPhone or use the web version on Android and other devices. We’ll post more information on our blog, Facebook, and Twitter.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food.

Calling all Android users

We love our Android friends and know you’re excited about locally grown food and supporting farmers. We don’t have a native version of Farmstand yet but we’re testing a mobile web version that works on Android phones. If you’re interested in helping us test please send an email to hi@farmstandapp.com. Thanks for your help!

Tend a Market

Show your farmers’ market love by tending your market. Help confirm hours, location, and update the market profile photo to get a special badge of recognition. Better claim your favorite market quick since only one person can tend a market. Visit the market profile screen to learn more.

Free posters for farmers

We’re always looking for ways to promote our local farmers and spark conversations. What is unique about the farmer? What growing techniques are they using? What makes them awesome? We created posters that help ask those questions. These are perfect to display at a farmers’ market booth and get people thinking. And did I mention that they’re free to download and print?!

Click the image for a larger view and use the PDF link to grab a high resolution version that’s easy to print. Print it at home or get a local shop to create a laminated 8.5″ ⨯ 11″ poster that only costs a few dollars.

You can help create a personal touch that represents each farmer. Let us know what you think and other phrases you’d like to see via a comment or email.
